15 percent is JUST barely enough of a tip for me to survive as a server..

We dont get minimum wage. It's far less than that. Then taxes get taken off. Then we "tip out" the "house" (restaurant) and other staff (bartenders, hosts, sometimes even the kitchen..) what do we have left?! Tipping out can be as high as %6 (2% to house, 2% to bar, 2% to front house staff eg: hosts)

I get left 10% sometimes.. how does this figure out?!

10% of say.. $30 is $3. Once tipout and shit if figured out.. Im left with about $2. 82

Okay, so that doesnt seem so far off.. but say if it's now the end of the night and Im tipping out.. I have made $100. I cash out at $94. Not so bad.. BUT every transaction that is made WITH A CARD now must have a 2% deduction on my tip to help cover "visa costs" that visa charges the owner. Now Im at 92. 12

Again.. not so bad. I wait for my paycheck.. I have racked in 50 plus hours of grueling waitressing.. know what Im being paid for being the chefs, patrons and owners "bitch"?

$300 BEFORE TAXES.

Im LUCKY if Im taking home $240 for TWO WEEKS worth of running my ass off.

Yes.. I should stop bitching and get a CAREER.

Good thing SOME customers are worth the bullshit.

I feel for you and usually tip 20% but realistically I can't see why I should have to pay more than 1/5 of the cost of my meal to the person that serves it to me.

Tipping is stupid. Why should I have to pay more than the listed price for a meal? I understand why we tip, but i think it should be abolished and restaurant owners should just start paying servers more.

I think Starbucks just got in a world of shit for taking part of the tips away from their employees. You should look into the legality of that.

I dont mind tipping well if the service I received calls for it, however, not all servers actually deserve a "great" tip even if the service was good. If all a server did was take my order, bring out food, and then bring a check, how is that worthy of a 20% tip? A good tip has to be earned with service, great attitude, helpfulness, and attentiveness. Unfortunately most servers don't possess all those qualities. Its terrible that the servers do not receive as much of their tips as they've earned, but if they were looking into a high paying job-they should have looked elsewhere for work. If you want higher amounts of money tipped to you, start giving better service and I'm sure you'll see an increase in your tips. If you do not want to change, I suggest you pick a better career that doesn't rely on earning tips as part of your living. Then you wont have anything to complain about :)

I can tell #6 never worked as a waiter. It doesn't matter how good the service is, there are still plenty of people that won't leave a good tip.

You forgot to mention the ignorance of foreigners. It's not customary to tip in Europe, but their servers are paid 9-13 Euros per hour, so their lifestyles are not dependent on tips. American servers are paid an incredibly low hourly rate, well below minimum wage. I make 3. 50 per hour, and that's after a raise. I used to make 2. 13 per hour. American servers depend on tips, which do not keep up with inflation. Restaurants only raise their prices to cover their overhead and other operating costs. After raising prices, the server makes a fraction of a dollar more. Hardly worth it. Commenter #6, you need to tip a server 15% regardless of service. Anything beyond that is dependent on service. You want restaurants to pay their servers more? Be prepared for every entree to increase in price by at least $3 to cover the cost of paying the employees a decent hourly rate. Also, as soon as you remove a server's incentive to provide even decent service, don't expect them to jump through hoops for you. I hate being a server. I'd rather have a desk job, but I make more as a server, despite the fact that there are always stingy people that flat out don't tip. SO HERE IS A RULE OF THUMB! Always tip 15%, regardless, and then tip on top of that for extraordinary service.

I try to tip well, for good service, but I think restaurants need to be more accountable to their servers.
I've waited, and I have never had to be responsible for the credit card terminal costs, thats bullshit.
Should the service station I worked at charged this back to the mechanics if the customer paid by credit card? No, Thats absurd!

The whole point of a tip SHOULD be to give the server a nice bonus for doing a good job not to pay their salary, that is the restaurant owner's job. I'll never understand how this ever started this way or why restaurant owners don't think it's their responsibility to pay for services rendered. And the double standard where restaurants don' need to pay employees at least the national minimum wage is ridiculous.

There is no reason to pay more than the listed price for your food unless the service was above and beyond what should be expected. It's not my fault you work for a shitty employer. And don't say it's because I never worked food, I did. I got out of it because the pay was SHITTY and people suck. I don't make a lot of money and I'm sure as hell not GIVING it to you. Or here's an idea, organize and strike for better pay just like every other industry has to. When was the last time you tipped your pilot for a safe landing? Never! And he made sure you didn't die. All you did was keep from spilling my food, and you probably handed it to the wrong person. Oh, and next time don't pour ice in my cup with my water in the middle of fucking winter. Idiot.

Also, how the fuck are you living on less than 600 bucks a month? Either you're a really shitty waiter that's living at home or you're lying. Or both, or you're homeless. Anyway you look at it, quit that fucking job and find a better one. Stop complaining cause it's you're own damn fault.
