Abortion, oh god
I do not care whether this country is pro-life or pro-choice. I don’t care weather a girl has an abortion, or gives the kid up for adoption. I don’t care whether or not fertilized egg is a human being or not.I do care, however, about children having good homes to grow up in. So, if keeping abortion legal is a way of preventing a child from growing up in a shitty neighborhood, and probably growing up to be a shitty person –then fine.
Or, we could do it the pro-life way. Make the woman have the kid –but if she doesn’t want it, there should be some kind of highly successful national adoption program for her child. But there isn’t –or at least, if I don’t know about it, then I can guarantee that a 19 year old mother doesn’t.
What makes me mad is that, in general, people who are pro-life are those who don’t support big social safety nets. They will fight tooth and nail to make sure that baby is born, but once it out of the womb, its on its own. They’ll moralize the issue, “I don’t how I’m going to take care of this kid…” says the mother, “Well, you should have thought about that before spreading your legs.” Obviously, that helps no one. The kid is still there, and chances are it will grow up in some shitty low class neighboorhood, and if it’s a girl, maybe need an abortion herself later on.
How about a national compromise? All those in favor of pro-life should be required to pay into a nation-wide adoption program. All those in favor of pro-choice should be required to pay into a nation-wide program that helps raise children who probably would have been aborted. –Lets see if people can put their money where their mouth is.- Everybody wins –and hopefully, abortion rates will decrease.
And that’s what everybody wants –decreased rates of abortions. People should really quite bitching about this or that morality, if it is a human or not. We have debated that issue for at least 30 years now, since abortion was made legal again –and what has it solved? Nothing. These types of moral/philosophical debates have no pragmatic use. What people should debate about is how make sure kids are in situations where abortion is not necessary –or what to do to help prevent a child from growing up in a substandard environment. But that, for many people, is too concrete of an issue. It requires some sort of emotionless reasoning and research –it is much easier to just bicker about whether or not a 10 week old blob is a human or not.
So to those who think abortion is some grave moral evil –abortion was legal in the United States in the early 1800s, and is legal now. Many countries are pro-choice. And yet society is still here, -we’re not worse off as a society because abortion is legal. And to those who think abortion is some kind of inherent right –no matter what people say, that thing is still in some degree a human being. Maybe not by much, sure. But lets not act like we have no emotional involvement, even if it is simply one cell.
The goal is not to enforce this or that morality, but to make sure this is a healthy, prosperous society. That can be done with abortion or adoption.

2I am pro-life, and your idea about having us putting our money where our mouths are is very good. I agree with your statement "They will fight tooth and nail to make sure that baby is born, but once it out of the womb, its on its own. They’ll moralize the issue, “I don’t how I’m going to take care of this kid…” says the mother, “Well, you should have thought about that before spreading your legs.” Obviously, that helps no one. The kid is still there, and chances are it will grow up in some shitty low class neighboorhood". Our adoption system is so messed up as well as our foster care system, I think that idea would carry much further. Good idea!!

3Not only that, but pro-lifers should probably considering putting more funding towards comprehensive sex education, rather than abstinence only, as a good percentage of abortions could have been prevented had the mother known about effective birth control.

4"So, if keeping abortion legal is a way of preventing a child from growing up in a shitty neighborhood, and probably growing up to be a shitty person –then fine."
So you're saying we should be allowed to play "god" and choose who and what kind of person is brought into this world?
Being a feminist I am pro-choice because a woman should have the right to decide what she wants to do with her body.
But personally, I think too many people use abortion as a method of birth control! There are many other methods of not having children, so instead of looking up directions to the abortion clinic, maybe some women should be finding their way to the local drugstore!!!

5#4: ugh. You suck.
"being a feminist I am pro-choice because a woman should have the right to decide what she wants to do with her body"
Good. Do what you want with your body. Eat healty, or eat bad food. Smoke or don't smoke. Wrestle alligators or have sex with monkeys. Those are things that you can do with YOUR BODY.
Once there is another organism inside your body, it is not part of your body. You are hosting it. Remember that movie alien? Kind of like that.
So, aborting a fetus is not making a choice with YOUR BODY. It is making a choice with the combined DNA of YOUR BODY and the DNA of a MAN'S BODY, which creates another "body" even if it's half retarded. And With your DNA, it most likely is.
That individualistic, self centered attitude of "MINE" is what's absolutely wrong with our society.
Look, I think it's cool that you are a feminist. I hope you fight for equal rights and equal pay. I hope that you personally help to reverse thousands of years of damage and social inequality, and I hope you raise awareness. I hope you help stop violence, and all of that stuff.
Honestly, I am not pro abortion or anti abortion.
On that note, let's just call it what it is. Pro choice is so watered down and sugar coated. Pro abortion is appropriate, because that is the issue.
Anyway, I agree with the original poster. Anti abortion people should have to pay for these kids that are born into the "slums", even though there are kids born into starving families in other parts of the world everyday.
Also remember, what we consider poor and trashy, to a person in another country it looks like living the high life.
We are a fucked up society. Everything is about "ME". The baby is "mine". The right to kill the fetus is "mine". "I spread MY legs to help make this baby".
You can't own things like this. You can only take ownership of things, not people. This is an issue where we as a people need to decide if we are going to support social programs, or if we are going to support the "me" rights of other people.
Other places in the world don't call people their own. They all contribute together to raise the youth in their community.
We just toss people aside and say, what's mine is mine and what's yours is yours. You dont deserve my help, I'm chasing cars, money, and a big house. You and your kids are in my way, now move for ME.
In our society it is almost ABSOLUTELY NECCESSARY for abortion to be legal. Without it we would be even worse off than we are. It is basically the same as throwing a baby in the trash, admit it, but in our society this kind of thing is the norm. That would happen alot more if abortion was illegal. That is too messy, and that is too many babies in the trash. So let's just abort them. Because they are OURS to decide what to do with.
Society doesn't care. Neither do I.
Do whatever the fuck you want with the kid, bitch.

8#7. you make me want to vomit. I assume from the reference to your -ahem- 'cock' you are male. so you can do whatever you like with the aforementioned 'member' and wont necessarily be the one who is stuck with the consequences, or the decision to be made.
also, your grammar and/or spelling is atrocious.

9#5: No, "pro-abortion" isn't appropriate. Those who are pro-choice believe that when faced with a pregnancy, women should have the right to choose what to do with it. Available choices include aborting the pregnancy, adoption, or keeping the pregnancy. No one here is "pro-abortion". Otherwise they would encourage it even when it isn't appropriate:
"Great news! I'm pregnant!"
"That's fantastic! Now you can get an abortion!"
Pro-choice is an appropriate label as they support a woman's right to choose. Pro-abortion, anti-life, etc. are not appropriate.
Ta-Dah!

10i had a girl pregnant once. real anti abortion bitch too. i just told her that if she didnt handle it, they would both be in the same place soon enough. it is amazing how women are completely unable to stand up for their opinions

11Abortions would be a lot less common if women would quit being such fucking prudes about blowjobs and anal

12#5: I actually do that. I'm very pro-abortion. I'm even more pro-sex ed and pro-pregnancy control, but most of the people around me who get pregnant are fucking idiots. Literally and metaphorically.
Personally I don't want to have children, ever. Since the laws in my country don't allow me to get my tubes tied until I'm 26 (and even then I'll have to get "recommendations" from a social worker and a psychiatrist), until then it's the pill and the condom. Accidents do happen, though, and if through some freak accident I managed to get pregnant, I'd abort it without a second thought.

13OP, good post but I just have to tell you, there's this other thing that's been demonstrated to reduce abortions, and you might have heard of it. It's called accurate information and access to contraception! Which the very same people who claim they want to stop abortion are presently working on dismantling and outlawing.
To all you 'pro-life' hypocrites both here and at the Planned Parenthood I volunteer at, stop harassing the patients, stalking staff members & their families, killing doctors, and bombing clinics. Start adopting all the unwanted crack babies you intimidate and harass young women into keeping through your 'crisis pregnancy centers', run a free daycare so mommy can work to keep her kids alive, support universal health care (for kids at least) and promote safe sex! Maybe then you'll be allowed to have an opinion on the matter.
Oh yeah. And stop parading your 12 brainwashed inbred kids around like pets and let them make up their own goddamn minds!
#4, I'll bet you not a whole lot of women just decide to skip the birth control because there's nothing they like better than spending their afternoons in stirrups with strangers poking at their bits!

14#7: So women should keep their legs closed... and men should wear chastity belts, with only enough of Mr. Happy exposed to take a pee. Men are equal partners in making a baby, but often don't want to be equal partners in responsibility. A man can choose to walk away with relatively little social stigma. Please stop blaming the woman exclusively and fighting to take her choices away.
#11 might want to explore the other side of his sexuality, or visit the local novelty shop for a special doll.

15The argument that abortion would prevent unwanted children is a flawed one. A child may be unwanted by the mother, or at least unplanned for, but you can put the baby up for adoption. There are lots of childless couples that would love to love and care for a baby, but simply cannot have their own.
That said, the idea that there is such a thing as an unwanted child leads to a higher child abuse rate.
I'm pro choice, women have the right to choose whether or not to have sex. The have th right to choose whether or not to insist that their men wear condoms. They have the right to choose wheather or not to take birth control pills. But after all these choices are made and a woman is pregnant, she should have to live with the consequences of her choice.
That said, it is unfair that it takes two people to have a baby, but once the child is concieved, the father just has to live with what the mother decides. He can desperatly want a child, and she can throw that baby away like garbage. He can desperatly desire to never have to see a kid again, and she can milk him for child support for eighteen years. I think if we are going to have abortions in our societies, men should be able to plunk down the money for an abortion and consider that their only committment to the child. After all, mommy dearest has that right.
