Wasting away

What the fuck is wrong with the world? There are people starving - and I'm not talking about third-world countries here - and we're throwing out tons of perfectly good food! I just walked past a dumpster behind the local supermarket and it was full of fruit and vegetables. Bananas, onions, apples, grapes, celery, potatoes, et. C. The only thing wrong with the potatoes was that there was one broken potato in the bag. The grapes were fine, the onions were a bit gnarly, but you peel them anyway. The bananas were ripe, not not overly so. I could see nothing wrong with the celery at all, the apples were fine too.
Instead of selling these off at a lower price, the stupid manager just throws them away. I used to work at a store where the clothes were cut up before being thrown out, to make sure nobody could use them even if they miraculously got into the locked trash compactor.
I'm not ashamed to tell you that a large part of my diet comes from dumpsters, especially veggies and fruit. The other day I found a bag full of still-frozen lamb chops, rolls, fish and ice cream. The reason it was thrown out? There was a new shipment just in and they had to make room. So, instead of giving it to a local shelter or food bank, they chuck it out.

I think a part of the reason for this waste is the faith we place in "sell by" and "best before" dates that we've lost touch with our natural sense of spoilage. Most people find it easy to tell if milk is spoiled, but some seem to think that everything spoils at exactly midnight on the "best before" day. Use a little common sense! If the milk smells fina and tastes fine, it's... Fine! Same goes for everything else. The can of fruit is fine as long as it's not punctured or bulging, even if it is a month past "expiration".

So, stores, stop wasting food! Give it to the needy. You may think that there are none in your neighbourhood, but do a little research and you'll be unpleasantly surprised.

Would you eat from a dumpster?

I know, I think more stores and restaurants need to donate food and clothing to the needy. The 'official' producer of merchendice for sports organizations, such as the NBA or NFL will make two versions of a product before their final game. The wrong version is donated to the needy. I think that's just fantastic.

A lot of stores will destroy stuff rather than give it away because they are afraid someone will get sick off outdated food and then sue the store (it happens) or will take the discarded clothing and sell it on eBay or something. Where I work they cut old tires and car parts with a Sawzall so no one can re-use them. I think that's dumb but it's "company policy"! Jerkoffs.

i worked at tim hortons in highschool (a couple of years back) and at the end of the night we had to throw all the bread/donuts/timbits/croissents out in the dumpster.
stupid thing is that people weren't allowed to take it home.. or give it to all the homeless people that sit behind the store

Wow if you wouldn't have written this already, I would. I'm going to college in Michigan now and when the semesters are over, EVERYone just throws everything into the garbage!! Last year, I looked just on the top, and I got the following things: A lamp (the 7 foot tall lamp you put next to a couch), a brand new laundry basket, rugs, dishes, chairs, a webcam, cleaning products, books, new clothes with TAGS.... and it drives me nuts how people don't just donate. I had a buddy I was talking to that had a fridge he bought this semester and he always throws it in the dumpster at the end of the semester and then just buys a new one because he never cleans it. I tell him "don't throw it away, I'll take it." Next time I talk to him, I find out he throws it away.

    I can't stand it : (

So many people don't have the money for a simple refrigerator, and these rich ****s just throw everything a way and buy new ones without any thought.
