I Speak German
So im in germany for 10 months. picked up on the language pretty quick, but my aussprache, accent, is not the best.whenever i go anywhere to do anything i do it in german, in prefect german. and they reply in english.
was wollen sie?
ich hette gerne eine meatball sub
what kind of bread?
FUCK YOU!!
it really gets me going that they complain that the USA is so shitty and that nobody cares about anyone other than themselves there and blah blah blah... and then when someone wants to change that, they dont let him.
thumbs up their asses

2Dunno, maybe they figured you'd be more comfortable conversing in English and they're just trying to be helpful. Or perhaps they are proud of their mastery of English and want a chance to try it out on you.
I'm always a firm believer in the "when in Rome" philosophy and it does irk me when I see my fellow American tourists talking loudly and slowly at someone in English figuring that will compensate for the language difference. Most of us ARE pretty dumb and arrogant I guess.

3i know how you feel... I have been taking german for over 8 years and when i try to use the language with a native speaker, they always switch to english. or worse, they act as if they have NO idea what i am saying unless i say it PERFECTLY. the WORST is that i am a german major in college. and sometimes people who did not even make it to the gymnasium communicate me better in english with me than i do with them in german. i understend that they are just trying to make things easier for the both of us and that their language programs tend to be better, but its like why have i spent all this time trying to perfect the language when i will probably NEVER use it....

4I lived in Rome for about 6 moths and got the same response whenever I would go downtown. I don't know if it's the same in Austria, but I lived in a "bad" neighborhood, one with a lot of immigrants who didn't speak English - those were the neighborhoods in which I learned Italian.
