Offensive Words
I wish people understood how incredibly offensive the word retard is. I come from a family where several people are mentally handicapped and have been made fun of for having a retard in my family. I don't think people think about the word and the meaning behind it when they throw it around like that, but I wish they did.

1Although I'm sure it sounds offensive to people that know a retarded person, it's simple the word 'retarded' with the ed missing so the word itself really isn't offensive.

4More often than not, it isn't just the word itself but the manner in which it is used. I have to agree with the OP, especially because so many people use "retarded" to apply to anything including autism, and it just points out their own ignorance.

7i come from a family with one mentally challnged person, he was my little brother, my best friend, and when people were so immature to make fun of me because i had a "retard" in my family, i would get into HUGE arguments and alot of times fights.
but like #2, ive learned that when people who dont know/dont think about the acuall meaning, there not wanting to be offensive in that way, there just simply looking for a quick laugh and a way to make themselves feel better.
My brother died at age 11.
now that im older and so is everybody else, i havent heard one remark of a "retard".
the word's for little immature fags, but i accept that and move on.

I just think that life is too short to worry about what other people think. Words don't hurt. You react the way you want to. It's a conscious decision (your feelings). People will always have an opinion, and more often than not, you will disagree.

10They're just words. Sticks and stones... ya know? It might not be funny to you, but it's funny to some. Anything funny is worth it. We have to laugh at ourselves. Even your brother should laugh at himself and you can laugh at him. If we could all just let it go.... no more insecurities because we didn't make ourselves so we shouldn't really take on that responsibility. Call me what you will and I will look at it objectively and maybe I'll agree with you and maybe I won't, and maybe I'll find it funny and maybe I won't, but you have a right to say it and I'd like to hear it.

11And (cont. from #10) if "retard" is so offensive... where is the line? What's not as offensive? What's more offensive? It's a matter of opinion really. First, it's more about the intentions behind the words than the words themselves. Second, I don't think that we should be restricted to doing anything that might hurt a persons "feelings". Buck up. Stand up. Be strong. Fight back with your words if you feel the need to. Either way, don't let it hurt you. You're making yourself weak by doing so. You're sensitive, but this world is not.
