Why is college the "norm"

why is college the "norm." i am a high school senior and all anyone seems to ask is "what are you going to do in the fall.." i have no idea. i dont think college is for me. i tell people i am undecided and some seem to think its such a wrong decision or say ".. Maybe you should just go because after you stop school you'll never want to go back" well SO BE IT! i'm choosing to stay out of school not only because i dont want to go but because i am a recovering drug addict/alcoholic and being in college usually has some partying to go with it. i just don't think it's right for me. LET ME DO ME, PEOPLE !!

Dude seriously, go to college then if you dont like it just drop out. At least you can say you've tried it. And, you never know, in 20 years time you could think to yourself 'I wish I'd tried college'. If you don't like it, no ones keeping you there

Just because you go to college doesn't mean you have to party all the time.

Yeah, you kind of have to look for parties, generally speaking. You don't really just fall into them.

Or you could go to a dry school.

Or try a little thing called self control..

I'm not sure entirely how American education works, but I'm pretty sure it would be a pricey mistake to make.

If you don't want to go, then don't. You can always change your mind at a later date, when you know what you want to do.

Don't try college and drop out. It's too pricey. You CAN always go back to college after you try working without a degree. That's what my mom did. She graduated when she was 38 and pregnant with me.

College education makes getting a better job easier. I worked in a factory til it closed then went to college got my associates now I wish I had my bacholors. It never ends.

College doesn't always help when you're young, a lot of the time it narrows down your job choices or makes you "over qualified." I worked full-time for 2 years after high school, did 3 years in the military then came back to the same job but at higher pay and attended college part-time. Worked out well and I spent 12 years at that employer before going to work for myself. The only thing I think I would change might be to have done more traveling when I was younger and not tied down.

Don't fret it kid... I was in the same boat right out of high school. I'm 27 now and am a college freshman. Granted, The campus I'm on provides me with no "campus life" I'm still going. That's all that really matters... That you DO go... If you want to go in 5 years, then great. If you want to go back in 10... Super. Don't let other people's words make you do something you don't want to do... Make the decision for yourself

Going to college immediately after high school is not a requirement to succeed in life. Travel to places you have always wanted to see, try something you have never had the opportunity to do before, or join a volunteer organization and help others. Do not let other people's criticism sway you from making up your own mind. It is your life. It does not make sense to me about the projected drug and alcohol abuse if you were to attend college. Since you are a recovering addict you know that you can not avoid being around substances. However, again, it is your decision that counts. You can always wait, see how your life pans out, and in a year re-evaluate your situation. Go for it! It is your life! PS. I am a seasoned mom who has been there, done that, and am quite successful and happy.

Don't worry, take some time of, but at the same time don't let it go to waste. I took 2 years of right out of high school and consider it the best decision I've ever made. Just like you I simply didn't know what to do, what to major in etc. To make a long story short i traveled, surfed and worked. I spent 2 summers in Europe, 4 months in Indonesia and other Asian countries, 3 months in South America and another 6 months in Australia and New Zealand, and thats all in 2 years. In order to sponsor my trips I worked and saved up. At the end i did decide to go to college. However, it took me 2 years to get there. Today, I'm finishing up my BA in accounting (completed it in 3 years) and will be graduating in 2 weeks. I also have a good paying job in my field. The time spent abroad taught me a lot about myself and other people, more than any college could ever teach you. The decision is up to you, but make sure not to waste time. Hopefully your parents will understand. In the beginning mine didn't, but at the end they couldn't be happier. BTW I miss those times and the people i've met more than anything else and hopefully one day i'll be able to do it all over again.

I didn't go to college, I started working right away. And now I have a better job than most of my friends with a degree. If you know what you want to do, college is a great thing to do when you're older. I plan on going to school eventually, and I'm glad I waited until I was older so I could really appreciate the education I'm paying for.
