Don't get a dog if you can't be responsible
If you feed your dog Alpo it's like feeding your kid cheetos for every meal. It's absolute crap. If you can't afford to spay or neuter do not have animals. If you cannot afford to feed them well do not have animals. If you do not have time to give them the training and care they need do not get them. I think there should be some sort of test you have to pass in order to get a puppy or dog just as there are tests to adopt shelter animals. Those who flunk get a note on their license or something.

1I agree that people should have to prove their ability to care for a pet before they are allowed to purchase or adopt one. (Hell, I think people should be tested before being allowed to have kids, too.)
Sadly, it just won't work. People will breed pets illegally, and others will buy them.
Still, you give good advice to wannabe pet owners. Wannabe parents should take the same advice to heart (maybe not the spaying/neutering part - maybe).

2i feed my dog old roy. that is worse than alpo, and no, i cant afford to feed him better, but i live off the dollar menu at taco bell, so it aint like im doin so hot either. But you know what?? I got him from the shelter, so if i didnt adopt him, he would be dead. Now he is happy, he plays with other dogs, and he is alive. Im sure he absolutely hates eating crap given what his previous life was like

3I agree with #2. Unless someone abuses an animal the animal is almost always far better off no matter who the owner is than not having an owner at all. The alternative is running wild and ending up in the pound. So, expecting people to pass a test first makes no sense unless you like the idea of having all the ownerless animals being put down.

4Do you have any idea how many dogs are put down in this country? Between 2 and 3 out of ten dogs born will be put down by a shelter in this country. That means with every litter of puppies, you could just pick a few of them up and club them in the head with a hammer. it is the same effect

5A lot of communities have low cost spay/neuter. It's SO important to get your pet fixed, not just from an overpopulation standpoint but also for their own health; risk of some diseases is much higher in intact animals.
Feeding is important too, you don't have to buy the best dog food on the shelf but at least buy something that's certified nutritious. And get 'em checked out once a year.

7Did you know you can get food out of the dumpster and make your dog more nutritious food than Old Roy? I do it. I garauntee my dog eats better than most humans. Also if you want the go the premium kibble route dogs are sick less, poop less and eat less. You need to feed a heck of a lot of Old Roy to equal the nutritional value and calories of something like Innova EVO. That's a fact.

10I'm sure many dog foods aren't the best, not just Alpo.
But otherwise agree that too many pets have irresponsible, neglectful owners and it makes me sad for the animals.
Agree with comment #1 that its a good idea, but it will never be enforced.
