The elderly deserve more

It's funny how when we are born we have no control of what happens to us--when we go to the bathroom, where we go, what we do. Then when we hit old age for many of us this is what happens again. Only now people don't care.

Everyone makes a fuss over babies--oooh widdle johnny made a poo junk. Yet the people who cared for you your entire life and who sacrificed for so many are shoved in a home with a visit once a month because you are so busy with your family. Your mother and father--your granmother and granfather are your family! They did so very much for you and now you simply cannot deal with the thought of their or your own mortality so you turn a blind eye.

Here's the truth--for most of us there will be no one to care when we were old. Sure people may say they care but they are too wrapped up in their own lives and hate to see all the depressing parts they have to look forward to......

I'd rather they just shoot me and save themselves a whole heap of trouble when I'm too old to do anything on my own anymore. That's just me of course.

Seriously, put me down. We're more humane to our animals than we are to our own kind. I wish to be put out of my misery as well.

I'm guessing that the two commenters above me aren't old. Talk is cheap. Your tune will change when the time actually comes.

I keep joking to my friends that by the time my kid is out of diapers, I'll be IN them. But yeah, old age sucks because it gets a little closer every day, things like aching joints, getting tired easier, having to watch cholesterol and blood pressure. I guess maybe kids are there so you have a reason to keep living.

And the really sad part is that these people are paying $6000 a month to get treated like shit in these nursing homes because they're too ill to defend themselves.

6 grand is the going rate for a medi-ocre nursing home. The "good" ones are more than that. "Good" meaning the building is well kept and may be in a nice part of town. There might be a few plasma screens on the walls and a few nights of bingo. You still get treated like shit by people who hate their job but are too lazy to find a new career.

I agree #5--and to hell with saving any money. It almost seems pointless to put this money aside for your retirement or to leave in a will when most likely you will go to a nursing home--have everything you worked for your entire life sucked dry only to get treated like shit.

This will happen--unless you get some kind of really good nursing home care insurance when you are younger. You can't give your money away unless it is 3 years before you go in the nursing home (who knows they are going to get sick that far in advance)--you can't hide it--you can't keep your home (unless you have a spouse)--it all goes--everything.

To posters #1 and #2--not everyone in nursing homes are extremely elderly or not wanting to live life. My mother is 61--the age when many are just thinking of retiring--due a major spinal chord injury she has no control over her bodily functions and cannot walk--she is totally mentally with it and can use her upper half around 70%--she still likes to go out to dinner and to church and everything else--she just needs to be there as we would need round the clock care and expensive equipment (lifts ect) to have her somewhere else. There's also someone there with MS who is only 38 yrs old and has a 5 yr old daughter--she loves to knit and do handcrafts ect and is fine to talk to--but she just needs more care than what she could get at home.

This disparity in treatment is due to the presence of potential. Babies have the potential to become full fledged productive members of society, or at least, a higher likelihood of becoming one. The elderly are more likely to become less and less productive, and therefore have continuously less potential to contribute to society. We are willing to invest time and energy into babies and their futures much like we are willing to invest more money in a company when the returns on our investments are high. Investing in a failing company is bad business sense. I'm not saying we should get rid of the elderly. Humane treatment of people plays a large part in this. This just explains why we have a tendency to forgive the young more readily than the elderly.
