Leave Me Alone
I am so sick and tired of atheists attacking my religion. So what if I believe something different from you?I am Christian, I follow the words of Jesus, I believe that Jesus was the Son of God, and there is nothing you or anyone else can do to change that. So please stop trying.
I let others believe what they want to believe, and I never try to force people to convert. The least you could do is treat me with the same level of courtesy.
And the only people I have ever had trying to tell me that I'm wrong are atheists. And they say Christians are the problem...
I admit, there are some Christians that are even worse than atheists for having a "holier-than-thou" complex (I'm looking at you, evangelical Americans), but if the atheists think they're so great then why do they act the exact same way?

1"And the only people I have ever had trying to tell me that I'm wrong are atheists. And they say Christians are the problem..."
I totally agree. I was raised as catholic, but am now agnostic. The only people who i've ever heard heckling others about their religious beliefs are atheists. I really really hate it. I mean, I'd love to believe in god and everything again, i really really would - i just cant. But yeah, i 100% agree.

2I'm not exactly atheist and I'm not exactly Christian. I don't know what I am, but I do know that I like a good, solid religious debate. I think that the atheists might just be interested in hearing your side of the story. They challenge you because they WANT to believe (or don't and want to hear why you do) and maybe you're the person that could make them see something differently, but then it turns out you can't. And that sucks and they're back where they started. MAYBE that's it. It's just... as a kid you're taught about Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and God all at around the same time and you're expected to take them all at "faith". Then it turns out... there is no Easter Bunny... and there's no real Tooth Fairy, and now fucking Santa isn't real! So now what?! I'm supposed to continue to take God in good faith? And I'm supposed to do this despite all of the contradictions contained in the bible and the fact that people live to be 500 years old and that flaming bushes speak and that there's a story about waters flooding the entire world except for an ark where animals ignore their natural instincts and co-exist with one another?? It's like another fairy tale like Santa. It's hard to keep blind faith when you're taught to have it and then shown it's false and then... well everything we told you except this bible and this God thing was false. Then you go on to look at the other religions and the fact that if what you're told is right then all of them are what... wrong?? Going to hell? What? I mean I'm not athiest, but I totally see the reasons behind challenging the views of a strong Christian. It's healthy to want to hear those answers. It's hard to take religion at face value and it's almost your responsibility to question things like that. Otherwise you're the same sheep that accept everything you're told... easily manipulated by those willing to manipulate you (government). If they're not going to change your mind, then get in there and stand for what you believe in. Hopefully you're intelligent and in depth enough to have answered these kinds of questions for yourself, so maybe you could help a fellow human being out and share what you've come up with. If only for another perspective to look at. It's not a personal attack if they question you. In fact, it's not an attack at all. At least when it comes to the religious debates I've heard. So, in conclusion, you must not be too bright or in depth or you wouldn't be complaining, you would be explaining.

4Can't say I've ever encountered a militant atheist. I'm an agnostic so basically I don't enter into religious discussions (positive or negative) with anyone. It's their own business as far as I care. If it makes your life better and doesn't kill anyone, go for it.

5From the OP:
#2, I would just like to point out that I enjoy a good religious discussion. One of my favourite things to study is world religions, because I like hearing about other people's beliefs and sharing my own. What I can't stand is when people attack my beliefs, saying that I'm wrong, especially when they have no intelligent arguments against me. I don't blindly accept what I'm told, either. I read my Bible with a critical eye, being careful for things like translation errors and context, and I draw my own conclusions. And yes, I do think I'm right. But that doesn't mean everyone else is wrong. What I believe is right for me, but people are different from each other, so their beliefs should differ as well. If you truly enjoy debating religion, do some research on Zoroastrian belief. They make some very good points.

6At the end of the day you hold some disgusting values, and the world would be better off with a massive pile of dead christians and burning bibles. There, I said it. Whew. We got through it together, and we didn't need to read a bed-time stor- er, bible passage for advice no better than flipping a fucking coin.
Douche.

8This is all fine and dandy, but stop making laws based on your beliefs and keep that shit out of public schools. That is all we ask.

10^ Maybe I'm just dense, but what does that have to do with this discussion?

11my bone to pick with religion in general is that it is consistently a source of conflict. it's another way that people can divide themselves into camp "you" and camp "i". many religious rules are simply rooted in prejudices that existed thousands of years ago, and while some of the more insane rules are disregarded, some of them are not. and in some cases, most of them are still held up as gospel and used to bash people over the head with, or as an excuse to go around killing and alienating - hence, conflict. why should we let rules that first stemmed from people from thousands of years ago, govern our lives today?
i could go on.

12From the OP:
#6, you are exactly the kind of person I'm talking about.
#7, THANK YOU! It's good to know there's some people on the same page as me on this.
#8, I agree. Religion should be kept separate from schools, except for a world religions class, which should be required in high schools. Luckily in Canada we don't have nearly as much of a problem with that.
#9, if you took the time to read the comments, you would have seen that I read the Bible accounting for translation errors. For example, the one in the creation story. The Hebrew word for "day" that was used in the context of God creating the world in seven days could also mean "an undefined period of time." Thus, I am a Christian, but not a creationist. I am an interventionist, just like many great minds, including Albert Einstein.
#11, I also agree with you. Christians should not live their lives by the Old Testament. If Christians actually lived by the words of Jesus, there would not be those kinds of problems.

13i would still qualify the words of Jesus as rules that were made up way too early to be relevant. believe what you like, as i believe what i like - we should be above religion by this point in time. call yourself an interventionist, and you basically admit that you overlook bits of the bible as you please. Albert Einstein was never an interventionist, he was simply misquoted by opportunistic interventionists. and that certainly doesn't void arguments against religion. why not look beyond the bible altogether for a way to live your life?

14I think you're misunderstanding me. I don't overlook parts of the Bible that I don't like. I just only live by the gospels.
What do you mean we should be above religion? Are you implying that religious people are intellectually lesser? You think you're better because you have been enlightened by science? That, my friend, is what causes prejudice and hatred.
Look beyond the Bible? I do. But not entirely. The Bible is still very relevant. You can't say it isn't just because it's 1700 years old. Were the mathematical ideas of the Greeks too ancient to be applied today? What about their philosophical accomplishments?

15I find it wierd that people believe that there is a higher power like god or jesus etc thats IMO. I was raised a christian but now im an atheist and proud to be because I choose not to get involved with everything like that, devoting your life to something non existent. IMO I believe that there probably was a jesus and he helped people, the word spread and it became like a chinese whispers game and the story just got bigger and bigger. Also If something like the bible was so well written, why are there so many condradictions. Its hard to believe to take any religion serious but Its peoples beliefs and I dont judge people.
