Participation...
i'm an english major and this year i've noticed that all my profs are dividing up the courses so that there is 10% for participation... i'm shy and i am not very good at expressing myself verbally ... it's not fair that there's nothing else for those of us who don't want to participate in class. why, oh why must we suffer??? i have no problem teaching a class (i already tutor for a living)... but in the classroom i just like to have a lecture-style prof... but now, they're all bombarding us with "discussion" time. ugh.Rating:0.00

Eventually you will have to speak up in a situation where you aren't in control. This is just prep for such a situation.
I'm not offended or anything, but don't equate tutoring to teaching, there is a big difference between the classroom and a study session.

Participation grades are a myth. Professors today are afraid that you will challenge your grade with the dean, head of the department, etc. By giving a participation grade, the prof is insulating his or herself from this. If you bitch about the grade you receive, he or she can point to the participation grade. Although the superiors may beleive that your papers were worth more than you were given, the prof has some discretionary points that they can give you. I have made many "A's" in courses with even up to 30% participation scores where i did not say a word in class

Lucky you. Our 45% of my History grade was based on participation.
Probably because the teacher does so many skits ...

I totally feel for you. I absolutely HATE participation (particularly in English for some reason) in class, and avoid it as much as possible. It's kind of weird though, cause it's the only time I'm really shy. In most situations I'm pretty confident. I'm always out and love socializing. And it's not that I'm afraid of being wrong either - I've always been fairly smart in my classes. Well the majority of my classes, I did always suck at art..
