"Gay gene"
someone in another post said scientist were researching a "gay " gene. does this mean gays are handicapped or that being gay is a disease, like cancer or down syndrome? if so, will gays be gettin handicapped stickers for their cars and will there be more handicap parking at gay bars? will they get social security checks every month for being gay?can anyone enlighten me?
if being gay can be seen as a handicap or a disease, how many of you think they should receive handicap benefits and treatment?

1i have heard that there is a "fetal fagit" gene that doctors can detect and possibly cure during pregnancy with hormone therapy or something. i'm not sure how developed this science is at this time tho... but i read it in Time magazine while i was waiting to get my car's oil changed and i thought it was pretty interesting...

2well some people say being gay is a "choice" made by those who had really nasty controlling mothers and so their hatred for their mother and thus the whole female sex by association along with self hatred makes them seek an alternate to the sexual norm.... it's said to be a form of pedophilia

3Being gay isnt a disease. It's just different than being straight. One of my best friends is gay. He's just a person.
If you're gay, you can't change who you're attracted to. One of my friend's who's gay tried to be straight for years.
He's still gay.

4it is an "illness" a DSM something level disorder, comment #2 is pretty much on the money. #1 that seems like a little speculation at this point but that would be nice if they could essentially cure gayness within the century, not to be a biggot or anything but being gay is not a nice way to live no matter how u look at it, i've known alot of gay people and they have terrible hard lives. of course there will be those stubborn tryin to keep the culture alive

5Ok I think you all completely missed the point. The 'gay gene' is not seen as a disease like down syndrome, it is just a gene which shows some pople are pre-disposed to being homosexual. They've also found it's not a real thing, just a way of justifying it to homophobes or those who think it's immoral.
Also, there is no gene for cancer, dipshit, it's a mutation of cells. Lung cancer caused by smoking doe sto happen because of a gene, it happens because you're poisoning your body.
#4. Are you a special sort of retarded?? Being gay is not different from being straight, in terms of the way you live life. All that's different is the semantics of sex.
None of you know anything!! Being homosexual is a choice, because you fins yourself attracted to the same sex. 105. I don't believe that ALL cases of homosexuality are choice. Some of them yes (My grandmothers friend was raped by a man and chose to be a lesbian because of that experience) but I know many a gay who wishes that they could be straight, but they can't change their sexual preferences. I am almost certain that some day we will find a genetic or chemical tie to homosexuality.

11Supposing it was genetic, and there was in fact a gene involved - what would that do to society if scientists found a way of switching the gene?
Would there no longer be a gay community, if people's desires could be switched as easily as say, going to the doctor and getting a pill?
Would it be easier for politicians and individuals against gays have a legitimate reason to enforce a no gays policy?
Would gay people even want the pill at all?
As someone who is straight, I'd really hate to take a pill that would make me gay, so I can't imagine anyone who is gay wanting to take a straight pill either.
I say fuck it. For all the trouble it will cause, its not worth it to know.

Open your mind. Homosexuality is not a new concept. The Ancient Greeks did it and it was not looked down upon. Look at Catullus' poems (a Latin poet) "vivemus, mea Lesbia, atque amemus..." His poem is to a woman from the island of Lesbos, where it is said that all inhabitants were in fact lesbians. Sappho, Lysistrata, I could probably keep going if I wanted.
Just get a fucking clue before you judge what you don't know.

And what difference does it make what the ancient Greeks did? They did all kinds of fucked up things thousands of years ago, that doesn't make them normal.
The reason women are more tolerant of gays is because they are more like them than men are, no surprise there.
If they do find a cure one thing they shouldn't do is make it a choice, they should dispense it in the air or the water system. Curing homosexuality should be treated just like treating the plague.
