SUVs and the gas crisis
I understand that SUVs are practical for some people, just like vans, semi-trucks, and work trucks, but for everyone that doesn't need an SUV, hasn't the cost of gas gotten high enough you might reconsider buying one???? I know that SUVs are not the reason we have a gas crisis in the US (and yes, it is a crisis and yes we are in a recession, despite what Bush's legion may say) but I do feel that 6 mpg is contributing to the high price of gas.Why do people need an SUV? Generally, it's a status symbol, so US advertisers, let's promote less environmentally hurtful products like cars and hybrids. I have a car, it gets around 35 mpg on the highway and 31 mpg in the city. At the current price of gas it costs 40 bucks to fill up my tank and I can go about 450 miles before refueling. Who would prefer spending over 100 bucks filling up to go 250 miles? I don't understand it!
Also, if you buy a SUV, can you please first know how to drive it? I know some people get SUVs because they are "safer". Yea, safer for the driver when they run over my little car. Not safer for me, sitting at a red light obeying the law. TWICE I have been hit by SUVs, both times I was obeying the law, both times I was injured far worse than if I had been hit by a car (according to two doctors and about 4 cops). If you get an SUV that does not give you license to drive over cars just because you are bigger. This isn't the elementary school playground, you can't beat up the littler autos for their gas money, this is traffic and people can die. Also, "safer" - they flip really easily!!! Take a yield at 35 mph (which you shouldn't do but I've seen done) and you catch air and can flip!
So why, Americans, do you persist in buying SUVs when they do not improve your life, they are not safer (in the long run), and they are using up a precious resource? Please can someone ban SUVs? I mean, this country banned pot use to avoid it becoming widespread, but SUV use is widespread and far worse in all ways than pot use! Ban SUVs. Give everyone with an SUV the option to sell it back to the dealer for fair market value within the year and then ban those bastards. That's a political platform I'd vote for!

I think most people that drive SUVs do it for practicality and have kids. They sure beat the hell out of driving a van, at least if you're a guy. Now, the people that drives Hummers and get 7 miles to the gallon and think they're cool, they're just plain dumb. There are much better SUVs for any of the reasons people buy SUVs. Arnold starts driving a Hummer several years ago and suddenly everyone thinks driving what used to be a military vehicle is cool.

they are not going to ban a certain model of vehicles. this is a rant, but it doesn't give you a free pass to be dumb.

I use my SUV for things a car can't be used for so even though some people might drive them for no good reason, most of us do, so who are you to say we don't have a right to drive them just because you don't have a use for one?

I work with animal rescue, at any time I may be called upon to transport animals anywhere in the state, sometimes out in the sticks where the roads are dirt, gravel and mud. I have carried as many as 6 at one time. So yes, I need something bigger than the average car. But I also drive sanely and I'm able to get 25+ MPG with my V-6.
Gas prices will continue to rise as demand across the world increases but right now they are artificially high. My uncle who is in the US Navy says they are being called upon to watch and guard dozens of tankers full of oil that are just SITTING in the Persian Gulf. The greed of the oil companies and the good-ol-boy relationship with the Bush clan is what is making the problems worse.

my wife drives a SUV, she got it for... well i have no flipping clue. She had it since before i met her. She just liked to have all that extra room. Also there are starting to be hybrid SUV's that get like 20 mpg... but i think suv's in general are dumb, but i guess if you have the money to drive them that is your right.

I don't think they ever will ban a certain type of vehicle--but I do think that if the right people come into office there will be stricter guidlines on manufacturers for MPG--and that will cut into how SUV's are made.

My brother's wife just traded in her 35+mpg car for an SUV. They brought it down to show it off. My brother and I were looking at it and he's telling me how it only seats 4 people and there isnt a big trunk, or cargo area, blah blah. Then he gets this depressing look on his face and says very quietly, "it's just like a big, thirsty car".

I move that bad SUV drivers receive stiffer penalties for accidents than those in smaller cars.

Now, I drive an SUV because it was a gift for my birthday. I drive it because I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth and it's a safer car than any one I could afford on my own. Also, I don't live out in the country, but I do haul stuff around. It's nice to have a car big enough to move tables and twenty bags of mulch. Also, I do volunteer work, and the bigger car is better for buying goods for our concession stand.
All the benifits aside, had I been able to choose my car (I know, beggars can't be choosers and I'm properly grateful) I would have chosen a hybrid. I'm lucky, I get about 24 mpg in my SUV, but my mom's little car gets like 33 mpg. Also, it has a blind spot the size of a small building! I have to spin around in my seat to avoid my blind spot. Also, they don't stop well.

I loved my GMC Suburban. Until it rolled that is. I was driving on a gravel road, doing about 40 or so then a God damn deer jumped out into the road. So I swerve, go into the ditch, have a panic reaction and roll it. Now, before anyone says I knew it would roll, the cops told me that if I were in any other car, it would have rolled too. So that aside my life was saved because of the strength and reliability of this vehicle. Not all SUVs are bad. My Suburban normally got at least 18mpg so I didn't have problems with gas. And I am now going to get another one, because they are safe, reliable, useful and made in America.
