Mercury
I broke a CFL lightbulb in my room today.. I found out it contains mercury and is spread throughout a room when the bulb breaks and I didn't clean up right. We can figure out how to make a nuclear bomb but we can't create light bulbs without an agent that causes brain dementia??

1When my grandparents were kids the schools used to let them play with mercury.
Doesn't it suck?

3I still can't understand the big push to those light bulbs. They have huge displays in Home Depot. And yes, when they break they are a serious health hazard. How they ever got approved for the public is beyond me.

4I'm the op, and I just looked up led info. (i've heard of leds before but knew nothing about technical specs). They do not contain mercury. Why the fuck does the usa push to sell all these mercury containing lights?!?!?! I don't get it. I really don't. I mean, if I were the ceo or something of the "cfl company" I wouldn't fucking sell these to people if I know they are going to break sometime and I know they contain mercury?!?

5OP again. Next weekend I'm standing out on the road next to wal-mart with a sign that says something like, "Don't buy CFL energy saving bulbs, they will kill you."
Maybe that will get some info to people who need it.

6Also the damn things don't last anywhere near as long as they want you to think. I replace incandescents maybe once every 6 months, the CFLs about every year or so. But they cost 5x AS MUCH! Fuck that.

7I wouldn't worry too much about the mercury, my mom used to play with mercury and nothing's happened to her yet.

83 and 4:
They are profitable. That's why. One thing I've learned about corporations is that they don't give a shit about people, only money.

9This is also why the incandescent light bulb is still used by suckers who do not understand total cost of ownership. LEDs are the cheapest in that regard.
Sure they cost more upfront (this is all people think about) but over time they are a hell of a lot cheaper as they use much less electricity.

10Are LED lights more profitable then? Why don't they push for the use of LED lights instead?

11they say that they save our environment but once they DO burn out they are impossible to get rid of!!

1210: The electric companies wouldn't make enough money off LEDs. At least CFL's still somewhat balance the revenue streams of both the electric companies and the light bulb manufacturers. Everyone is happy.
