Tolerance

I am a professed agnostic, bordering on atheism. What is it about my lack of belief that makes you hate me? Do I hate you for your lack of evidence? No. When I tell people that I am agnostic or atheist, they react as if I had just drop kicked a puppy. Would you be happier if I were Hindu? Moslem? Any religion at all, as long as it conformed to mankind's propensity to believe in a higher power? What atrocity has been committed in the name of atheism? Do I try to convert you? Do I send atheistic missionaries to do my good works? No, I respectfully disagree with your beliefs, but I would more than willingly defend your right to believe. The powers that be in today's society are thoroughly penetrated by religious ideals, which makes it difficult for a man like myself to conform while respecting my own affiliations. Even my morals come into question. Am I unable to determine what is right, and what is wrong, without a religious leader defining me? I am giving up morals in favor of ethics. Ethics can be explained in clear terms, aside from what is right and what is wrong, in a way that is more concerned with what is better for everyone involved. Moral issues can be misconstrued, and are arguable and assailable from all religious angles. Ethics can be separated and considered from an academic point of view. So should be the government, concerned only with ethics, and not morals. Only in this manner is a truly secular governing body formed. In truth, the government should be devoid of all religion, secular in all ways. My personal opinion is that this should extend even to government officials and personnel. Let the individual citizen decide how to live their own lives in accordance with religious policies after having been regulated by federal guidelines. Do not even attempt to inflict your religious guilt upon the rest of us, through laws and provisions, aggressively lobbied and pushed through an already overburdened legislative branch by the "moral majority" and religious right. I don't want to hear any more debate about the morality of abortion, stem-cell research, or gay marriage. If these are against your beliefs, do not practice or condone them, but absolutely do not push your beliefs on the rest of us. Your religion is a personal relationship with your God. It has no place in government, and is most certainly not a political tool for furthering your group's beliefs. Unfortunately, as I said before, the government is rife with religion, of all types, many conflicting with each other. Always interlocking, the interplay between religion and secular law currently establishes no higher authority. One is always trying to upset the other. In a secular government, the allowable laws would be wider in scope, allowing for the individual to craft their own beliefs and lifestyles in agreement with their personal religion. However, in a religion dominated government, their is no room left for personal secular decisions. The ideal situation would be like a hierarchal chain of laws given by decreasingly powerful authorities. First, the secular government legislates broad guidelines, dictating what is and isn't legal and ethical, then, these could be refined by all different religions, defining what is moral. Then, those who are not involved with these religions can stay within federal guidelines without having to cave to religious pressure. Instead, what we have, is a cluster of differing religions trying to exert influence on the larger governmental authority, resulting in a chaotic mess of conflicting opinions and authorities. Though I must say, we are a surprisingly secular society. We must become moreso, however, or risk deepening fractures amongst our increasingly diverse religious communities. The end result of a strictly religious society is a theocracy, much like those known as Islamic states. I am not yet willing to give up my freedom in exchange for total religious domination. The end result of a strictly secular society is unknown, since there never has been one in all of history. I might be willing to see what a society governed by reason, academia, and proof would be like.

The faithful will never fail to impress me with their good works and compassion. The unfaithful will never fail to impress me with their unending reason and individuality.

You are a rare atheist. Most hate religion and think that all religious people are mentally handicapped.

My eyes hurt. Paragraph breaks, anyone?

Anyway I get what you're saying, & mostly agree with ya. Wish some of the people I work with would lighten up and not take it as a personal affront that I have decided think for myself.

"I'm religious" = "I can't think for myself and I need an ancient fairy tale book and my imaginary friend in the sky to hold my hand through life and tell me everything i need to know."

Excellent rant. My only suggestion is to break up paragraphs, as it's easier on the reader's eyes.

I'm glad I'm not othe nly one who sees that "separation of church and state" is a joke in this country. Far too many of our laws try to enforce religiously-based morality on people.

I have my own spiritual beliefs that don't coincide with any organized religion, but I find myself having to conform to some religion's idealogies because of legislature. Religion has no place in our government. Now, if only I could change it...

Always remember... There's a difference between God and Religion.

Great rant by the way - cept for the paragraph thing. You DO know of course that it was far too sensible and rational for this planet...

    From the OP:

Sorry about the paragraphs. I didn't realize how long it was until after I submitted. And I forgot to sign it. It's been a while since I've posted...

if i had my way, there would be no religion.

seeing as i don't have my way, it would be nice if people could just keep themselves to themselves?

    lack of faith is disturbing.

one without faith has nothing to live or die for.

That's the problem. It's not that we have nothing to live for, but rather that we have nothing to die for. We aren't likely to kill people in the name of a higher power. We live for ourselves, but that does not make us proactive in our attempts to kill others, as does having something to die for.

i agree, with some of it. the original author had some very good points. however a few of these posts have been downright idiotic. don't look down on people for believing in a so called "fairy tale book". if they want to, get your damn nose out of it, if they don't, STILL get your damn nose out of it. people, both religious and non, just need to shut the fuck up and get along. it isn't hard.

"We cannot do great things, only small things with great love." --Mother Theresa (sp?)

I'm not deeply religious, but I do lots of good things for people every day, because otherwise it will come back to bite me in the ass. Even if you aren't religious, it's easy to make someone's day. Help out at a church dinner. Go to Africa or to a poor country and help out there. Listen to others. There are so many ways to show you care. For this, religion should be a moot point.
