Adventures in Shopping: A clerk's view

So I have a great set of customers that I deal with on a day to day basis. They are really nice, understand if I'm having a bad day, something gets mis-labeled, etc. But there are a few bad apples that try and spoil the barrel. Case in point, I have a few people who just seem to wig out on me, whether they are late for a ferry, or have a million things to do, or didn't read the effing sign in the first place. I'm a patient person, folks. But my patience only stretches so far.

-I can understand that your eyes may not be able to see some of the smaller typescripts we use. But where I draw the line is where you delibrerately don't read the sign where it says in the flyers, "Must purchase one of the items listed in order to get the second item free." In other words, NOT 50% OFF THE ITEM. You need to buy TWO.

-I do NOT control the prices, Corporate does. So don't bitch to me about why I can't give you American pricing (I'm in Canada), because I HAVE NO CONTROL. Neither do the managers. Whining and being a sucky customer will do you no good.

-US citizens: we like your business. You folks are helping me raise enough money to go to school. For the most part, you people are nice enough to put up with some idiot cashier (aka me) who will ask you all sorts of questions about your vacation and where you live when you are not visiting our fine country. Please don't be offended when I ask for ID for credit cards and such. I just don't want my boss after my butt because someone committed credit fraud while at my till. Nothing personal.

-Debit cards, in Canada, will function as credit cards. Unfortunetly for the both of us, I cannot give you cash back. Reason? The Fed and the Bank of Canada don't get along very well. So the systems will be different. Please be aware of this.

-On that note, if it's YOUR card, with YOUR name on it, YOU must sign it if you want your groceries. I'm not sure whether this is a federal law or a provinical law, but just humour me on this. And this goes for us Canucks too.

-I am not a bank. I cannot always provide change, particularily in the early morning or if I have just gone on to a till that has not been used (very much) that day. I cannot always give you cash back because then I will not have enough money so that I can give other customers change.

Other than that, I have a good job. Thanks to the people I work with and the awesome customers for putting up with me and for letting me have a little fun. Sorry that the rant was so long.

That's not a vent; you didn't say fuck once!

It is possibly the most polite post I've ever seen on here though.

Why thank you my good sir! I don't like swearing because my parents tried very hard to make me into a lady. In some instances, they failed. My language is not among these failures.

    Sounds like my job!

    My personal favorite incident:

A lady told me that she had been shopping in my store for so long that her frozen pancakes had melted and she no longer wanted them. Um excuse me? A. Go home and stick them in your freezer or B. Shop in the frozen dept. lastly like most smart people do. Besides, I felt the box, it was still cold. And of course, I just had to smile politely and say "sure thing ma'am!".

Don`t ask me why people have either no sense or little brain matter. The other day I was arguing with a customer over a simple bun. She said it was 32c. Me, working in the bakery as well as cash, said it was 60c. Another customer confirmed it. This little old lady pretty much threatened to give me hell when she got back with the `correct`price once she had paid for her groceries and then would go check out our bakery section.

She didn`t come back to my till. XD

Sounds like a very reasonable set of issues. But I have to laugh a little because we get a lot of Canadians here in FL where I live and many of those same things come up with THEM. I guess it's just people, anywhere.

I applaud you on your self-control and respectable language. I wish I'd kept a handle on both of mine... But alas, I couldn't take people's stupidity and selfishness anymore without saying exactly what I thought about them... I'm not a very nice person. I lament that a lot of the time.

Please don't change. There's not many people like you. The world needs you.
