Pornography doesn’t fix a dull marriage it feeds a sex addiction

A friend of mine posted this on her MySpace page and I couldn't resist putting it here.. I'll post the message first and them my response to her as the first comment:

Pornography doesn’t fix a dull marriage it feeds a sex addiction

The amount of porn available these day's is unreal. They have more porn on pay per view with cox then regular movies. I can't even watch a family movie by 7pm on a sat night because cox cable has choose to feature more porn then regular movies. It is embarrasing when my family wants to see a movie and right next to doctor dolittle you will see pimp your wife, teenage hitchhikers go down, and busty cheerleaders. They might not be showing the actual footage to our kids but they are still exposing them to the literature. This in itself should be illegal.

I remember people saying that they would rent pornos to spice up a dull marriage. If you have to watch strangers have sex to want to sleep with your spouse then you shouldn't be married to them. How is mimicking vulgar sex positions ever going to restore your marriage? The only thing I have seen porn do for people is increase a destructive type behavior. It leads to adultry and many other luid acts. Porn is from Satan.

When child molestors are caught in almost every case you will hear that they were not only addicted to porn but would force their young victims to reinact the sex acts with them.

Company's like cox should be more responsable and not spread such filth to all their veiwers. I don't pay $163 a month cable bill to see that literature listed on my tv.

    Here was my response:

Sara, I love you sweetie... but I gotta make some comments here..

You should be able to change your guide to not show specific channels. I can understand your feelings when it comes to what's on at specific times, but they're not going to change the programming no matter how pissed off you or anyone else gets. Adult programming is big money for them, much more than PPV or anything else.

I've also heard about people renting porn to "spice up their marriage". I'm going to go out on a limb here and speak to my side of it... People watch porn for a number of reasons: seeing someone else having sex is exciting (voyeurism); people learn something different and want to experiment; people are fulfilling some kind of fantasy. Maybe it's something else. Now, making the assumption that porn leads to adultery is somewhat of a reach. Unless you have some solid data to back that statement, it's nothing more than a personal opinion. I happen to like porn, Does that make me an adulterer? Does that make me a Satanist or morally corrupted?

As far as child molesters go, I can't say that every one who has been caught was addicted to porn. There's something wrong with those people on a psychological level or maybe even a physiological level. I can't say that porn has anything to do with that but it may feed their problem. Again, data is needed here to corroborate.

Companies that broadcast television make far too much money to stop showing porn of any kind. You don't have to watch it and, if you choose, it costs a lot to view. I know that first hand since I work for Dish Network. You need to face the grim reality that the broadcasting companies don't give two shits about what you have to say by yourself. If you're that upset about it, start a crusade to have things changed. I wish you the best of luck, but all you'll do is waste your time and money trying to fix something that can't be fixed from your end.

If anything is a crime here, it's that you're paying $163 for that cable bill!

Your children are going to have to learn about the real world at some point. Besides, if they're old enough to read those things and actually do read them and comprehend them, then it's time you talked about that sort of thing with your children. They already know, they just don't have your guidance at this point. Also, program your own TV for the settings you wish. Just because you have kids who you don't want to see porn, doesn't mean there aren't a bunch of tax paying adults who don't have kids who'd like to see more controversial material even on basic cable because I don't think there's a valid reason you can't say or show certain things on TV. Your children = your responsibility and they shouldn't be a reason for everyone else to not be allowed to see porn. They also shouldn't be a reason that I can't watch a movie without hearing screaming, but that's another story. And the only reason sex offenders have so much porn is because they're crazy people with psychological problems and nothing better to do than download porn to try to feed their crazy fantasies. There are a lot of us normal people that normally watch porn and normally enjoy it because it's... you guessed it... NORMAL. It doesn't lead you to the pits of hell. I haven't conversed with Satan since I've looked at porn. My soul isn't sold. Porn is fine. Who gives a shit anyway? Don't judge me for liking porn, I don't judge you for over protecting your children.

    I have to disagree.

Like all things porn is okay in moderation. Don't get mad because you don't know how to work your TV to stop the porn from coming up. I can't even find the shit on regular TV right now. My dad has that shit locked up. What lucid acts does it provoke? my masturbating is it... And I doubt sex addict go to porn. They want the real fucking thing. They go to hookers. Porn addictions go to porn. And where does you friend get their statics from?

    * 86% of rapists studied admitted regular use of pornography. 57% admitted imitating pornographic scenes in the commission of sex crimes. (Marshall, 1985)

    * Rapists are 15 times more likely as non-offenders to have had exposure to hard-core pornography during childhood, between the ages of 6 and 10, and report an earlier age of "peak experience" with pornography. (Goldstein, Kant and Hartman, 1973)

    * In a national poll of mental health professionals, 254 psychotherapists reported in their clinical practices cases in which pornography was found to be an instigator or contributor to a sex crime, personality disturbance, or antisocial act. (Lipkin & Carnes, 1970)

    * Pornography, especially child pornography, is used by pedophiles for three reasons: (1) to stimulate themselves; (2) to destroy the consciences and lower the inhibitions and resistance to sexual activity in their intended child victims; (3) to teach a child what to model in the sexual encounter with the adult. (Det. Bill Dworin, Sexually Exploited Child Unit, LAPD)

    * 87% of molesters of girls and 77% of molesters of boys studied in Ontario, Canada, admitted to regular use of hard-core pornography. (Dr. William Marshall, 1983)

Hmmm even with the statics I still like porn. And I think it's all good in moderation not including the rapist and molesters and such. Just like normal people that don't rape kids.

Actually, a fair body of research evidence (including randomized, controlled experiments) has documented that pornography use causes an increase in aggression, particularly towards women, as well as impersonal attitudes towards sex, diminished attraction to and caring for one's spouse or romantic partner, and a host of other ills. No, it doesn't make everyone a child molester, but it makes most people a little more aggressive and a little less loving.

And the idea that porn in any way reflects "the real world" and that kids should be exposed to any part of it is ludicrous.

Well, this is the real world, and there is porn in it. Nobody said porn itself "reflects" the real world. Also, it wasn't said that children should be exposed to it in any way. It WAS said that the regulation of such a thing should be up to the parents. All I'm saying is, there is a market for it, so therefore it will be sold. It's kind of like, what came first the chicken or the egg: people are weird/crazy so therefore they watch porn, or porn causes weirdnesses/craziness in people. Maybe it's a little of both. We'll never know. Especially not by looking at a bunch of statistics. My point is, you can't outlaw something or make it illegal just because you don't like it or your kids don't like it or you don't like it for your kids and just because statistically (which, by the way, statistics are a bunch of crap most of the time anyway) child molesters do. We shouldn't be so quick to just make things illegal. It doesn't solve the problem at hand. My recommendation, education. Educate your own kids, even with a controversial and uncomfortable topic such as child molestation and porn. Do it for the benefit of them and society as a whole. Give them the tools they need in this world, you can't protect them from it. Teach them how to live with/in it. Its hard to pull your head out of the fairy land you're trying to create for them long enough to prepare them for the real world, but do it anyway and give them some brain power. It's your responsibility and yours alone and nobody is going to do it for you. You chose to bring them into this shit whole we call a world. Making porn illegal is not the answer. I mean, if that were the case, we should make lots of things illegal because they are negative in connotation and contribute to distasteful behavoirs. Example: Lets outlaw being a fat ass while we're at it! I'm tired of looking at you soggy bottomed cow stomachs.

And what of the 99. 9 percent of us who like porn yet have no such illusions or aggressive tendencies? Sorry, your "facts" don't fly. You took them out of context to make your point. How about furnishing some facts that show that well adjusted individuals who watch pornography DON'T rape children or demean women. But you won't will you? Nope. Not part of your agenda.
