Annoying obnoxious internet ads

The internet ad community blew it When they started with the popups and the obnoxious flashing colors, people decided they had enough. Popup blocking programs came out and eventually browser add-ons like Adblock Plus and noscript followed. Now people don't have to be exposed to this crap any longer and can view the content that they want to view, without being distracted and/or interrupted.

SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT

Website owners seem to think that they are entitled to make money because they have a website. Guess what, you are NOT entitled to one penny! If you have a service that people are willing to pay for, that's great. A susessful businessman you are! But most sites don't offer anything worth paying for and so the webmaster thinks it's appropriate to plaster their sites with all kinds of obnoxious garbage. They expect to be able to sit on their ass doing nothing and soak up the ad revenues. That's freeloading as far as I'm concerned. They deserve to be burned.

MISPLACED BLAME

"Blocking ads hurts websites".

Like I said above, the internet ad community blew it and caused adblockers to become necessary to make the Internet not suck. So blame the people who invented that crap, not the people who got sick of it. Such blocking programs would not be necessary and probably wouldn't even exist if it weren't for those idiots who invented the flashy annoying ads in the first place.

"Nobody is forcing you to visit ad-infested sites."

Thing is, we can now see the site in its non-infested form. Just like if I could get rid of all the garbage from TV I would watch it again. While using adblock, think of yourself as an exterminator getting rid of the internet's pest problem. So, need to pay your hosting/bandwidth fees? Get a job! Get up off your ass and get a job. That's how people pay their cable bills, their electric bills, ISP bills, etc. So why should hosting bills be any different?

"If you had a website, you'd understand".

If i had a website, I'd find a way to pay for it other than annoying the hell out of my viewers. If I can't afford it, I can't afford it. If I have a business or something to sell then I'd make money from a website and/or have a reason to have one. I'm no marketing genius, but there must be some way to pay for stuff other than in-you-face annoyance, right?

Think of a website as a way to express yourself. Self expression usually costs money in some way. Painting, writing, etc.

WANT TO STOP PEOPLE FROM USING ADBLOCKERS?

Not all ads make the Internet suck however. If you feel you absolutely must have ads, use the Google text ads and non-animated ads. No popup ads, no full page ads, and stop using ads that otherwise serve to distract from the main content of the page. Oh, and don't put them somewhere where they interrupt what someone was reading, such as in the middle of an article. News sites do this a lot. People will be much less likely to block them and you might gain a bit of respect from those who got fed up with the other garbage, and maybe make a buck or two on the side. Take away the reason most people use adblockers and they will stop. Brilliant!

CONCLUSION:

Take back the Internet! Install Firefox, and the Adblock Plus and Noscript add-ons. Learn to use all three and you will have an Internet experience free from all the horse excrement stinking it up. Website owners will either wake up and realise times are changing, or they will go down in flames. The good sites will find ways of paying for themselves while the shitty ones will just vanish.

To webmasters who use this annoying crap: Don't worry, there are plenty of idiots out there who still use Internet Explorer whom you can bombard with your crap. But realise that its days are numbered and its market share is dwindling as more people are using Firefox. You still have time to change. But it won't last forever.

So, take your annoying and obnoxious ads and shove them where the sun don't shine!

NOTE: Let's be clear. Before anyone grabs a rope, this rant is not referring to any website in particular and is not against ALL forms of advertising. There are such things as non-in-your-face-annoying ads. This rant is simply against the annoying obnoxious ads which I believe are the reason why people use adblocking software.

Someone always fucks it up for the rest of us. If webmasters hadn't gotten carried away with using popups and used the technology wisely I doubt anyone would have ever developed a popup blocker.

I agree with most of your points but we've all gotta make a buck and if people won't click ads that we place discretely on our sites, then we're pretty much forced to get in their face.

You obviously have little understanding of advertising. If it wasn't for advertising the only sites on the net would be personal blogs. Who else would run a website if it didn't make money somehow?

Exactly my point. MySpace pages are personal pages. I said the only sites would be personal pages. Of course no one would have a MySpace page if MySpace didn't exist and guess how MySpace makes money?

The world would be 100000000000x better WITHOUT myspace, but it's so ubiquitous that it's ridiculous.

The world would be better with more personal sites that actually have a reason for existing and no MySpace. Hell, even the MySpace pages that have something worth reading are usually rendered unreadable because of the idiotic layouts and backgrounds.
