Something for nothing

I work at a major brand auto dealership, and I can't count the number of people who come in looking for free repairs and/or advice. Or they'll buy some part that some other mechanic told them they needed (often incorrectly) and then ask me to install it for them or show them how to install it. We try to do the best for our paying customers but we also need to make a living! If you won't buy your car or your parts here, then don't expect us to provide free service outside of your warranty!

Unfortunately there are dealers that advertise how they are happy to help customers. There's an ad running here in Orlando right now for David Maus Toyota and they show some chick pull in driving a car she didn't buy there and she gives them the sexy helpless routine and they fix her car and then when she asks what she owes the guy says, "You don't owe us anything ma'am, it was a simple fix." The she says she's going to be sure to buy her next car from David Maus Toyota. LOL

So as much as I sympathize with you, it's people in your own industry that are causing the problems.

i'm a little out f my element because my dad was a mechanic and an auto parts store manager, but i would say be nice to the people asking for advice, they ask because they trust you and they wont buy a car unless they trust you. second, if they bought the part at a parts store its because they thought they could save some money there. do you blame them? no, and they shouldnt blame you when you charge them a little more for the fix.
we would rebuild transmissions in our garage, so there wasnt a lot we couldnt do, but when my car needed an alignment, we at least bought the parts from the dealer. i asked my dad why and he said its just etiquette.
