Fluoride

My stomach becomes inflamed like hell when I drink fluoridated city water, or any water that has fluoride in it (99% of water companies add fluoride for "taste" even though you can't taste it, and for babies, even though they don't have teeth).

And the only other option is distilled water, with absolutely no ions. Usually food makes up for this, but not in the summer when you're thirsty for a gallon or water per day.

SO now what?

In summer, a good substitute for fluorinated water would be a watermelon. It contains more then enough water to keep body from dehydrating, while no fluorine to irritate.

On a side note, installation of reverse osmosis filter might be a good idea to deal with fluorinated water any time of year.

It baffles me why they put a toxic waste product in the water supply to begin with.

Brita water filters eliminate fluoride (only brand I can think of at the moment - sure there are others). You can simply attach it to your tap.

Fluorine is not toxic, nor it is waste.

But fluorine is a very powerful oxydiser. That, aside from everything else, is why it`s good at eliminating microorganisms in the water - single-celled organisms are much more vulnerable to that kind of substance.

Frankly, it would be a misnomer to call exposure to pure fluorine poisoning. It`s closer to burning. About the same kind of deal, that happens in pure oxygen - when iron wire could be ignited by match.

But, on the flip side, fluorine is a VERY nasty stuff. Hydrogen fluoride is considered one of the strongest acids in existence, and it eats up even glass. Containment unit for pure HF is a sponge-like ceramic within titanium tank - and even that is a liability, when we`re talking more then few hours of storage.

Therefore, yes, when something as dangerous as fluorine is in question, even trace amounts in drinking water could cause inflammations and irritations, especially when coupled with increased stomach acidity.

However, the reason to use fluorine is within the fact, that althrough fluorine CAN cause unpleasant effects like those, at large, effect is still beneficial.

There are other ways to clean water, of course, but not every city can spring for ten pounds of silver each quarter to keep water clean without fluorine.

#4, it's fluoride, not fluorine, big difference.

Also, fluoride is NOT used for cleaning water. It is added just because people don't want to pay money to dispose of it (Yes, it does protect teeth, that's basic chemistry... But just because it bonds to your teeth doesn't mean we need to drink it by the gallon!). It would actually use less energy for the water company NOT to add it to the water, and it wouldn't cost money.. Since again, it's not used for sanitation.

Thank you #5. I'll bet 4 feels really intelligent after his huge rant on the wrong topic.

No such thing as fluoriDe on it`s own, that`s the problem.

There`s fluoriNe. And there`s hydrogen fluoriDe, potassium flouriDe, carbon fluoriDe. But no fluoriDe on it`s own. As to why it is so - well, for concise answer look up chemical naming conventions. In short, fluoriDe is used as adjective to another word - it means that whichever element is mentioned with it forms a molecula with atom(s) of fluorine. Or, for chemically-sapient - fluorides are all salts of HF acid.

Now, as to why fluorine is added to water - to keep microorganisms from multiplying in said water, making it hazardous to drink.

Chlorine was used for same purpose, but fluorine seems to be less noticeable/dangerous while giving same effect.

On a side note, I`d like to mention that fluorine has a lot of uses in chemical industry. If anyone classifies it as industrial waste - either they are making profits on squandering it, or they are trying to mislead people into purchasing various kinds of equipment and/or supplies to keep the "toxic waste" fluorine from damaging their health.

Though, looking on things realistically here, it`s highly unlikely that you`d believe me. After all, to do that one must be capable of logical reasoning and looking up relevant facts. So, uh, good luck on "toxic waste" fluorine.

And hey, if you`ll ever be in position to regulate the disposal of this dangerous "toxic waste", look me up, will you? THAT waste I`ll help you take care of, no problem. It fetches pretty penny among "compos mentos" people.

Fluoride's main reason for existence in the amount it exists today is because it's what's left over after reactions that make fertilizers....

Also... Fluoride exists alone.. They are IONS, and fluorite, and fluorine.... It's the name for fluorine when it becomes an ion (which is why it bonds with teeth....)

Strictly speaking, this is called "water enriched with fluorine ions".

Because, once again, fluoride is not a substance. It`s a part of chemical naming that is never meant to be used alone.

Though, I guess people not studying chemistry might use fluoride alone to mean fluorine ions. That only serves to create confusion, as any unofficial naming.

As for fluorine and fertilisers, I`m afraid you have your facts mixed up a bit. Indeed, various fluorides are unpleasant byproduct of phosphatic fertilisers in particular. However, they are not separated at the production stage. Rather, they are polluting the soil that had been treated with phosphatic fertilisers. Which, as you should understand, makes it quite.. ahem, problematic to add into drinking water, as main problem with that pollution is getting those salts out of soil in first place.

Hey... at least it ain't Tetrachloromethane (aka Carbon Tetrachloride). That shit is seriously nasty stuff.

#1 had the right idea. Don't see why we needed a chemistry lesson.
