Religion did it

Islam is going through the same revolt Christians went through in the middle ages. Compare. Huge schisms (Shiite and Sunni vs. Catholic and Protestant) Holy wars (Jihad vs. the Crusades) External forces (the UN, its coalition forces, and Islamic countries like Iraq vs. Catholicism and the Moors) Except, Christians went through all this when humans had swords and shields. Now, they have guns, tanks, navies, bombs, etc. This will end the same way as Christianity's plight did, except with exponentially more devastation, with weaker sects, and divisions among all, providing for the downfall of its dominance in a world region (Middle East) We can only hope that out of religious turmoil will rise a secular world power as did the United States when it broke from its religious and political strangleholds in Europe. Over the course of a couple hundred years, this will come out of the chaos. History nearly always repeats itself. It is unfortunate that no one gets it. What happens next? So much death...

Excellent post. I'd guess it's because for the most part the people in the Middle East are at least a thousand years behind in development.
