Does anyone actually know how the election works?

Now i'm not saying you shouldn't vote or anything but does anyone realize that the popular vote doesn't mean shit? all we are voting for are electors, who in turn vote for the president and vice president separately. those are the votes that count, they make up the electoral college which is what the nominee has to win the majority of to win the presidency, which is 270.

now i know a lot of people will say that their vote matters, well it doesn't, the only reason the popular vote represents who wins a state is because the electors of the electoral college have all agreed on an unwritten rule to say the least that which ever candidate wins the popular will get all the electoral votes for that state. well this is not how it is written in the united states constitution. the founding fathers believed that the average person was not capable of electing someone into such power, which is why they created the electoral college of intelligent people, meaning business owners, successful politicians, and university professors, and others of that nature, who could be relied upon to vote for the best possible candidate. so when you tell me my vote can decide the presidency, i know it doesn't, it just tells the electors who they should mark on their ballot.

the only reason i am writing this is because of this stupid bitch i over heard saying that she wants to be like billy bob thornton and be the one to caste the deciding vote in the election, and you may think that i'm lying or that she is just kidding, but she told her friend the whole plan on how to become the deciding vote. which is another thing

if your are to fucking stupid or (thats an inclusive or) lazy to go out and vote early then why waste your time, if you don't get to the polling place by 7:00pm i believe is the latest they will close, regardless if you vote or not cause they don't give a shit by why should they remember you vote doesn't technically count towards anything.

and if anyone wants to flame go ahead i don't care what you say, i don't care if you think i'm a loser who doesn't believe in this process, i don't care that you think i'm just some kid who is telling the whole world what i learned today (i actually learned this back in elementary school because i have always been fascinated by politics) and just so you know yes i did vote because as an american citizen i feel privileged to be able to have somewhat of a voice in my government even though they don't technically have to listen to me, and if you have read this far thanks, as ventibate says i just needed to get this off my chest

    Interesting.

So, the electors pledge all their votes to whoever wins the popular vote in each state? But if these electors are supposed to have the presence of mind to choose the right candidate by themselves, why have the popular vote if it doesn't mean anything?

I see what you're saying about one person not casting the deciding vote, but the popular vote must mean something.

Not that it makes any difference to me, I can't vote anyway.

The electors can technically pick any candidate they want, but to go against the popular vote in their state would be political suicide.

Theoretically, one vote COULD be the deciding factor, like Billy Bob Thornton. If it's a state both candidates need to win the election (probably the last state to report); and that state's popular vote is decided by a single vote. However, it would be nearly impossible to determine who that person was, let alone report it due to confidentiality.

Yeah, that system is woefully antiquated and goes back to the days when it took 3 days to get a message from one state to another by horse. Now that the entire country can vote on American Idol (shudder) in seconds, and at least 90% of us have cell phones and/or Internet access, you'd think the country would get with the times.

It's not the people who vote that count, it's the people who count the votes.
