The War on Drugs
The War on Drugs is the biggest waste of money, time and energy that the US has ever undertaken. It is not only a failure, but is actually harmful to the US and it's citizens. Now, before you get the kneejerk, drugs are bad and should be banned rsponse, just read this and think for a second. Try to use reason and not just ignore your own brain because your high school teachers and the govy told you something, so it must be true.If drugs were legalized tomorrow, would you go out and start shooting heroin and smoking meth? I wouldn't and I doubt you would either.
Really, anybody thats wants drugs can get them. It takes about 5 minutes to find anything you want in any decent sized American city. So, illegal or not, the people who want to get high are going to. Look at the stats. By the govt's own stats, drug use has stayed exactly the same all through the years, WOD or not.
One of the major problems with illegal drugs is the crime associated with them. So if they were legalized, they would be sold by major corporations and not drug cartels and street gangs. Pfizer could make and sell heroin a hell of a lot cheaper than anybody in Afghanistan. So now the cartels and gangs are cut out. Violence goes down.
But what about the users you say. Well, drug users usually commit crimes just to get money to buy more drugs. So, if a major corporation is selling them for a lot cheaper then they were, a junky would need only a fraction of the money that he used to. Again, violence and crime goes down.
Another problem is over doses and disease. Most OD's occur due to the varying purity of street drugs. Today you might buy heroin that is 30% pure and you are fine but tomorrow you might buy some that is 60% pure. So you get twice as much and OD. If drugs were controlled, everybody would know exactly what they were getting and how much. It would also eliminate all the nasty stuff used to cut drugs in order to strecth out the dealer's supply. Also, drug would be sterile since you would buy them in a pharmacy and not in a balloon hidden in some guy's ass. And if needles were available, users wouldn't have to share used ones, thus cutting down on HIV and hepatitis.
But what about the kids? Well, currently, drugs are sold by criminals who don't give a shit if they sell to a 40 year old or a 14 year old. But if drugs were sold in a pharmacy, the pharmacist would have to check ID's making sure the buyer was 18 or 21 or whatever we made the age. Make it so you have to go to a doctor so he can expalin the risks and you have to buy it at a pharmacy and you have to be 18 or 21.
Lastly, we spend around $60 Billion a year on the War on Drugs, not counting the money spent on jails and prisons and the hours street cops spend arresting people with $10 worth of coke in their pocket. That money could be spent on a lot better things like health care or education, instead of wasting it like this. Plus, if drugs were taxed like the legal drugs, alcohol and tobacco, the govt would take in billions a year. That, coupled with the billions saved, we could balance the stupid fucking budget in a year or two.
OK, this really is the last thing. Why in a country that claims to be free, can the govt tell me, an adult, what chemicals I can put into my body? As long as I don't drive and I am not a danger to anybody else, what right do you have to tell me what I can put into me? We have already tried prohibition once and it was a spectacular failure. Not only did alcohol abuse increase, it also gave birth to organized crime. So why do we think that drug prohibition is any different? Drug prohibition has been a failure since Nixon started it and hasn't gotten any better. By the govt's own stats, the same amount of people are using now as they were before the WOD and the are only stopping a small fraction of the drugs coming into the country. so why not save all of us a little greif and a lot money and just end this nonsense. Sorry this is so long, but I had to say it.

1Are you cutting and pasting these from somewhere? because this is the third very long almost article like rant in a row.
I don't have anything against long well thought out rants, just seems curious. If they've been written specifically for Ventibate, it's appreciated.

2Brilliantly said.
I can't see how any sane, rational person can possibly support this absurd war on drugs. I just can't.

4No, not cut and pasted. I just found Ventibate the other day and these are things that have pissed me off for a long time. BTW, I did not write all 3 of the last posts. Just this one, although I have discussed this topic several times before, so I know what points I am going to make, which is why it might sound like a cut and pasted article, but I can assure you , it is not.

5of course we are not free to do or put what we want with our bodies. Freedom can't be forced upon a society. Don't get me wrong, America is the greatest place to live. But this so called freedom we have isn't what it used to be.

6Freedom doesn't need to be "forced" onto a society. It should be the default way of life.

7Freedom should be our right but there are obviously certain things that any civilized society needs to have laws against. I'm sure everyone will agree that no one should have the freedom to do anything they want. For example, I'm all for freedom of speech but go yell "hijack" on a plane sometime and see what happens.
Drugs are a bit different and although I think marijuana should be legalized I don't think that crack or heroin should be legal.

8>>>>>>> I don't think that crack or heroin should be legal.
I'm afraid you just don't understand.
No harm to others = fair game no matter what it is.
Harm someone else = you're in big trouble.
Do you arrest the gun in a murder? No. Nor do you outlaw it (at least if you're sane). You outlaw the activity that someone does when USING the gun. Same with drugs.
Drunk driving is a crime as it should be. Drinking by itself isn't a crime and shouldn't be either. Just like getting high or stoned or whatever should not be a crime by itself.

9you also fail to see how much of a waste of time and money it is. Did you read the original rant at all? Did it sink in?

14If the pharmacy is regulating the drugs, people will just get them and sell them to kids genius. If we tax the hell out of it, there will be a black market. Yes the war on drugs is stupid but so is coke. It is possible to use alcohol without abusing it, but it is not possible to use cocaine without abusing it - it is AWFUL for your body, and you can overdose anytime. People who break the law should just be shot and we'd save money.
