Body Mass Index Dispute
Fuck my health professor! He's an asshole! Why is he an asshole you ask? Because he said I need to lose weight because of my BMI (body mass index). Well you know what! Fuck that asshole!I am 19 years old and weigh 215 lbs. at a height of 6'1''. Now I tried to explain to my professor that I do not need to lose any weight because I have plenty of muscle mass which makes it look like I have a high BMI. I argued with him for about 5 minutes and he made it seem like I'm a bad person for having a BMI over 25.
These body mass index things are bullshit! He talked to each person individually who had a BMI over 25. My BMI is 28.4 but I am not fat by any means. Sure I have gained some extra baggage since I started college last Fall but my body fat % is only 13. He makes it seem like I'm obese and need help losing weight. It felt like he was putting me down. I am seriously thinking about going to the Dean and telling him how much of an asshole my professor is. It sucks I have 2.5 more months of his bullshit class!!!

1Everyone is fat if you rely on that BMI shit.
I bet your prof is a puny little pipsqueak that would break every bone in his body if he fell down.

2Just about any football player, weight lifter or body builder has a poor BMI and yet they can have a bodyfat level of less than 10%. Basing a person's weight on their height and some chart is ridiculous.

3going to your dean would be dumb. If your prof has tenure, he is untouchable. Colleges expect to lose a significant percentage of their freshmen, but do not like to lose their profs. You will not only be picking a pointless fight that you cannot win, but if he brings it up with the professor, you risk retaliation that might not be limited to humiliation-he could take it out on your grade.

4Something like that should be between you and a qualified physician of your choosing. He should butt out. You are right that the BMI is only ONE of several measurements that should be taken into consideration. A lot of bodybuilders would "fail" if BMI was all that mattered.

5My BMI is 29, but I'm a pretty active weightlifter. I weigh 210 pounds, but I bench 300. So, you know what I do to people who call me fat? I knock them over with my pinky.

6Yeah, BMI doesn't work with people who have a lot of muscle mass. It just doesn't work. It's for non-athletes. You're probably healthier than he is.

7BMI is stupid. Pro body builders would have a horrible BMI since most are about 5'10"-6' and weigh 240-260. Their BMI would be way high but their body fat is in the single digits. BMI is a waste of time, if you are 13% body fat, that is good. Tell your prof to fuck off.

8BMI's are meant for measuring populations not individuals. Some people in the medical field tend to forget that since there's a lot of studies pertaining to the Body mass index. It's also the laziest way to measure somebody's body mass.

9BMI is old science, so old that we (humans) were actually smaller in the early 1900's. Yah sure I have a few pounds, but even when I was a college athlete, my BMI would have been in the high 20's. It's a bogus and lazy way of measuring your health strictly from height and weight. Body Fat percentage and cholesterol and all of those other measureables are the correct way to determine one's health. Basically tell your professor to continue drinking coffee, eating lettuce, and granola.

10BMI is not only flawed for people with a lot of muscle but also people of above or below average height. I'm 6'4" and weight 260. My BMI is 31.6. That classifies me as obese but most people would only classify me as overweight. BMI of 25 for somebody who's 6'4" takes a weight of 205. If I lost 55 pounds I would hardly exist anymore. 220-230 is my suggested weight for my build and amount of muscle according to most doctors.
BMI is shit and so is your professor.

11You're 2000% right. According to BMI, Arnold Schwartzenegger (or however you spell his name) is obese. Anybody in the world can look at him and tell you he's not obese! But nothing but numbers are considered in BMI so it's crappy.
