I want to get my hands dirty

i enjoy classical music. i enjoy country music. i'm intelligent; i have a lot of things going for me; i love my friends and family more than ANYTHING i have.. but.. i want to drop out of this university and get in my truck. i want to drive this truck around the united states with the windows down for a month or two months, or just until it breaks down, before finally ending up in the midwest. i want to work on a farm all day; i want to work my muscles until they ache and my joints creek. i want to plow fields, harvest crops, corral livestock. i want to be outside all day.

i know a hard days work but i don't know the value of it. i don't get a sense of satisfaction from a 9 to 5, and maintaing four acres of property gives me no value. i want my hands to feel like the hands of my grandfather when i shook them for the first time -- hands that have known love and hard work within the same day. i want to spend my evenings on a porch that wraps around the entire house, sitting in a swinging bench while watching the sun set with a cold glass of lemonade or iced tea in one hand and my arm around a wife. i want to find the woman whom i can love for the rest of my life. i'm not selfish... am i?

i'm almost 22 years old. i'm at a university that is a 5-year program. it costs $44, 000 a year and i have 2 years left. i love to snowboard, the red sox, and the water, but i'm in love with what i want. my parents will hate me for a solid decade.

    hey d. K.

it's so amazing to hear a man - a true one at that- voice the things he'd love to do.. the things he's passionate about. your words touched me greatly because alot of images ran through my head (grandfather's hands... driving with the windows down during the summer.. working on a farm.. Which i grew up doing even though i'm only 20 year old girl.. before i moved to canada... i worked with my grandfather and father on the farm.. plowing, harvesting wheat) anyway.. i agree, you should do all that! you've got alot going for you... i do think, realistically, you should finish your degree... stick it out, only 2 more years. then go on the road. best of luck. you made my evening. it's nice to read someone's thoughts about something they're passionate about.
