People just don't care anymore

When's the last time you opened a door for a stranger? Do you talk to the person next to you in line, or at the gas pump? Maybe I'm from Texas, but even we are guilty of being anti-social to people. Has the news media scared us into submission? Be afraid of everyone? Stranger danger? Maybe. I think we've lost touch with who we are. The guy or girl you chose not to talk to could be really damn cool. Take a stand, live a little. See what happens. You might like it.

    I agree 100 billion percent.

It's because if you try to talk to a person they think your going to steal from them or rape them or something. When you try to do it they just look at your crazy like being nice now is a insane thing to do. I try to do it every so often. It works if you find a common ground. But everyone is so numb to the person around them so it doesn't happen often

I don't open doors for people. They can open it themselves. They could stand to burn the few calories it takes.

Word. I try to be friendly to people, and most of the time they look at me like I'm crazy.

I still hold the door open for people. The sad part is is about half the people can't even say thank you. So, I just say at a very uncomfortable volume that they are

    WELCOME.

Humanity isn't dead. Yet. It just entered a vegetative state, like chivalry.

Hell - I'll chat anyone up - and I don't give a good goddamn if they think I'm crazy! Cuz I KNOW I am. That's the great joke - we ALL are. And making someone's day make MY day.

Tho I also indulge in my EVIL side like #6. This too makes my day : D

#1 must have been an art major. One hundred billion percent? What kind of crap is that?

As for the OP, while times sure have changed, and not for the better, it is wise not to engage just anyone off the street. Sure, that person next to you might be cool as hell. On the other hand, they might pull a gun and shoot your ass dead. You can never tell just by looking. Better safe than sorry.

I've been on duty (law enforcement officer) and in uniform and carried on a semi-normal conversation with a man I was certain was going to kill me. I was at a gas station and went in the store to get my gas receipt when I realized I was standing next to a member of the motorcycle gang "The Outlaws. " He noticed that I saw him and you could see the fear in his eyes. He was so afraid that he figured his only way to survive not going to prison was to kill me...

... That's when I told him he had a nice bike and asked him where he was from. I told him I wasn't there to give him any trouble and didn't expect any from him. He agreed and we carried on a conversation, then both went our separate ways.

That was the first and last time I actually feared death as an officer. I know damn good-and-well I was more afraid than he was. But I didn't let it show.

The point is, you really CAN talk to anyone! It's not going to hurt you as long as you're respectful and use a little bit of common sense.

I open doors for EVERYONE!!! I don't care if your a lady or a man, older or younger, richer or poorer! I treat everyone with the same respect I would hope they would have for my mother or brother or sister or wife. Don't lose your charm for fear that someone might actually appreciate it!

OH! And if I hold the door for a lady and a (younger than 70 year old) man, the man had better thank me! For if he doesn't... I ALWAYS use the "YOU'RE WELCOME! "

    Good post, OP! #6 Wins!!!

Yknow I'd rather slam a door in someone's face than open it.

I view you all as scumbags.

"oh its such a nasty world" I hear you whine...

Well you all made it that way now fuck off and die the lot of you!

    Niggers...

Their culture has spawned ingnorance throughout this land like a plague.. Times are changing so be prepared for the worse yet to come!!

Ever since we (not me) accepted them as our equals, they have acted as if we let them off a leache instead of saying thank you for their own new found freedom, (to rape, murder, pillage and to basically say FUCK YOU).

By the way, Im not a racist, just an observer.

America is in it's decline. Two thousand years from now, archaeologists will dig us up and make several determinations about our civilization.

    1. McDonalds diet did kill us.

    2. Mickey Mouse must have been a powerful god.

    3. Wal Mart must have established tight controls over world trade goods.

    4. We never completely grasped the whole recycling thing.

    5. Americans were a obviously a mobile society as evidenced by the many paved roads.

    6. Americans must have slept on the ground because none of their housing has survived. (except maybe the granite countertops)

    7. Americans did not like each other much because, they erected large structures to imprision significant portions of their population.

My philosopy is, we humans are a bunch of dumb monkeys. We have great capacity to love and share when we want to. We are also selfish, paranoid and cruel at times. We are pitifully short-sighted in acknowledging our place in the universe. As a consequence of our lack of collective vision and action, I'm sure our fate will be much like the dinosaurs - extinction. Until that time comes, my advice is, limit the daily communication with the boob tube. Open a few doors and enjoy a little human conversation.
