The customer is not always right
Working with the public is the pits, working with the public and food is even worse. I am so sick and tired of my job, only because of the customers that think it is okay to be an asshole only because I can't say much back without getting fired. So many people talk down to me, as if i was a child. People are too ignorant to get off their cell phones while ordering, they act as if I am inconveniencing them, and as if I don't have a ton of other shit to do besides wait on them. People are too stupid or lazy to read the menu, so they ask me how much everything is 18 times. Then they get pissed when things aren't the price they want them to be. Some people have honestly yelled, walked out, threw fits like children. One lady even told me she wanted my entire family to die, merely because she thought her food didn't look appetizing enough.
One of the worst things is when I greet someone with a warm "hello" and they say YEAH, I'D LIKE ....
All I want is a little damn respect, is that so much to ask?

In minds of most people, your job is tantamount to admitting that you`re just an upstart or failure in life.
Sadly, there is no way to change that without ample alternative use of baseball bat in the afterwork hours.
I suggest you find something less people-oriented. Or, alternatively, something that looks through fingers on cutting jerks down to size.

The customer is always full of shit.
That's the new motto that reflects reality.

I agree that the customer is always right seems to be an old fashioned concept but I've been in business for many years and still follow that philosophy for the most part. I expect my employees to treat the customer the way I would and if they can't do that then they won't be my employees for long.
Obviously it will be easy to tell the employees in this thread because they'll be the ones bitching about customers and saying the customer can fuck off but if those employees want to keep their jobs they'll be sure to vent about rude customers rather than treat the customers rudely.
The simple solution is that if you're not a people person stay out of any job where you need to deal directly with the public. Can you imagine going to Disney World and being treated rudely by a park employee? Ain't gonna happen. That employee might put his fist through a wall later when he's alone but he'll smile and be polite to even the most obnoxious park visitor and that's part of his job, like it or not.

Not always.
The rudest person is unwaveringly polite, you know.

You know the best way to deal with it is to pull a scene from the movie Waiting. If you haven't seen that movie yet, you should, it will make working with food and people much more enjoyable!

"All I want is a little damn respect, is that so much to ask?"
Actually, yes, it is. respect is EARNED, not requested or demanded. With your shitty attitude, no wonder you work in a two-bit restaurant slinging hash. That job is not worthy of respect, unless you put on your best smile, and provide the best service. Then, and only then, will you EARN anyone's grudging respect.
Grow up.

7, this person earns my respect by doing his/her job and having to deal with dumbfarts like you. People love trashing those who serve them, I have no clue why.

8, you evidently never learned that respect isn't just given, it is earned. That was the point of my entire message.
I happen to tip waitstaff quite well, and better for excellent service. I know how hard their job is. But again, most food servers will tell you that if they smile, are pleasant, and attentive, they will usually earn bigger tips, and a measure of respect. Those with shitty dispositions are creating their very own vicious cycle.
So, I submit that you are the true dumbfart... although I would venture you are more of a douchey fucktard.

Why yes I was taught that respect is to be earned. I believe that you can still be respectable without giving respect away. You can start out in that job being the best waiter/waitress ever and still people will be rude to you, lots of times about things that aren't your fault. I don't blame people who get slightly depressed by that.

^ Slightly depressed is one thing. Downright nasty and bitchy is another. Suck it up and be the best waiter/waitress you can be, and push thru the crap, or find a new job.

I hate the term respect is earned, not given away.
Do you really think that high and mighty of yourself, that your respect is so worthy that it should be earned by everyone around you? I should be respected, because I am human, just like everyone else. I greet people with a friendly smile, no matter what. I am polite the entire time I am helping them, even if they are rude and inconsiderate. It just bothers me that I have to pretend to be happy and not annoyed while these people talk down to me like I am a dog. People freak out on me because they want something extra but don't want to pay for it. They act like I am the one that made all of the prices and rules. I don't make them, but I do follow them, and I don't feel I should be talked down to because of that.
Besides, I am sure there are many people in your life that you show respect to that have not earned it. A friendly smile to a stranger could brighten their day, even though they did nothing to earn it. Its called kindness, common courtesy. Look it up, dipshit.

Also, if I could have another job I would. The economy is awful, I have tried elsewhere but at the moment nothing is happening.

What is with all the ignorence here?? "slinging hash?" what are you predjudice? all of you that posted ignorant comments are probably the assholes this poor girl is talking about. I am also in the resteraunt business and take my job seriously because it pays my bills. I am actually qualified to work in business administration making double what i earn now but because of the economy this is what i have. There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for people to go out of their way to be rude because they feel a person waiting on them is beneath them. How do you feel when someone is rude to you? I can't believe you don't get pissed and want to rant about it? I would also like to point out to the idiots in here that assume she is nasty to the customer that she never posted that. I know that through my shifts i always stay professional and recieve complentary tips because of my good service and I still have the same assholes through out my day she talks about. I think all she is saying here is that "the customer is always right" has been taken out of context. Just because a person wants the price to be something its not doesnt give them the right to treat the server like a piece of shit.

Considering the OP and #14 attitudes, I can say with almost certainty, they deserve nothing. This attitude is the reason for the customers rudeness..... Customers know when you're faking it and will let you know it. Consumers have come to expect horrible service due to this precise attitude.
Whether you like to believe it or not, you are employed by the customer. When he/she steps into your area of work, you perform for them.
If you don't like it, quit.
